Tis me, the Fabulous Baker Boy, with another WTF Graveyard shift tale to tell!

To set the mood, in my store at midnight, all regular registers close and all that is open are the self-checkouts, manned by one employee who doubles as a stocker.

Now around 5am, I was passing the checkout lanes to head to the bakery when a man was standing there with a grocery cart, looking at all of the lanes and seeming a bit confused.

Me: Is there something I can help you with?

Him: Yeah where do I check out?

Me: The sel checkout is right over there sir.

Him: No, not SELF CHECKOUT. (said with a `tude) Isn't there a real checkout lane open?

Me: No, I'm sorry sir but until 6am, the checkout lanes are all closed.

Him: .... Are you kidding me? NONE of them are open?

Me: No sir, no one comes in to man the registers until 6.

Him: This is ridiculous. I HATE self checkouts!

Me: Sorry sir.

He turns around and staks off to the self checkouts, and in his cart?

A single bag of potato chips.

Hm, overracting much?

No doubt about it, it was a rough year when it came to losing stars to the hereafter. True, there were older actors, musicians, artists and Hollywood luminaries whose time had simply come -- not that we won't terribly miss the likes of Ricardo Montalban or Ed McMahon or Bea Arthur. But starting with Jett Travolta, who died Jan. 2 despite his dad's best efforts to revive him, and the freak skiing accident that took Natasha Richardson away in mid-March, it's been one blow after another. The summer kicked off with the bizarre passing of David Carradine in Bangkok, and was quickly followed by the deaths of two icons on June 25: Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. And it hasn't gotten much easier since.

As we flip over to a new year and go into reflecting mode, take a moment to remember all the stars we've said goodbye to in 2009:


Brittany Murphy, Dec. 20: The 'Clueless' and 'Girl, Interrupted' actress went into full cardiac arrest, and paramedics were unable to revive her. Toxicology results are pending. She was 32.

Rumors have been circulating about the two Supernatural stars since last November, though either has yet to confirm the relationship. However, in a myspace account believed to belong to Jared's cousin, the following message was recently posted:

Bethy Bow Down just got a wedding invi.! i have to go to idaho in febuary! oh joy! i dout i'll be going unless he pays for my plane ticket. ha cheap ass bitch! LOVE YOU JARED

Lady GaGa leaves the Nobu restaurant in Miami, Florida wearing yet another bizarre outfit after dining out with some fat idiot.

The singer, who shot to fame this year with debut single Just Dance, also donned a bright yellow wig topped off with a leather cap and shades.

lol, I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and it's 10:10pm NYE.

There's a massive fireworks display planned for midnight in the city centre. I was supposed to go meet up with my drunken housemate and her drunken friends in the city later (leaving in about a half hour) to watch the fireworks.

BUT for the last 45 minutes it's been raining and thundering and lightning-ing. It isn't abating - I can hear thunder right now, and the rain is quite heavy. One news site says "fireworks organisers say nothing short of a cyclone will stop the displays", but another says that the display would be cancelled if there was lightning, to protect technicians.

I should just stay home, yes or no? If I stay home I could just walk to the corner at midnight and get a somewhat decent view of the fireworks in the distance...

What was the last unexpected thing to happen to you?

A job just came to me! My old boss rang me up to ask if I could work over the holidays, and that they would get me transferred to my uni town!

Tyra Banks is "difficult" to work with, staff on her chatshow have reportedly said.

Banks announced the end of The Tyra Banks Show earlier this week, but her former employees have now allegedly described her as a "diva".

"There had been a high turnover of employees for years," a source told the New York Daily News, adding that it was "pretty difficult to work for Tyra".

"She and the higher-ups on the production staff could be extremely brutal," the insider added. "She really is a diva."


The source added that it "wouldn't be surprising" if rumors that staff hadn't been told about the end of the chatshow were true.

"When the show moved from LA to New York, several staffers weren't even directly told about the change," the insider said. "They heard through the grapevine it was going to move locations. Even so, a lot of those people gave up their lives on the West Coast so they could continue working for the show. Now they're out of luck."

Another insider agreed that the America's Next Top Model host is hard to work with, explaining: "Everything had to be done Tyra's way."

However, one employee claimed that they had enjoyed working with the former supermodel.

"Honestly, I don't know how it would be to work under her," the source said. "But for me, it was a good experience. Tyra just knows how she likes things done. And as for her 'diva-ness', well, it sells."

Is anyone surprised even a little bit? Because I'm not. I swear one of my favorite 2009 memories was getting to ask Adrianne Curry if Tyra was as bat shit in person as she seemed on TV. The answer was of course yes.

Rumours float of Britney Spears visiting Kerala

The popular tourist destinations of Kottayam and Alappuzha in Kerala were Tuesday evening agog with rumours that popular US singer Britney Spears was arriving on a private visit with her kids.

Tomy Pullikattil, who owns a fleet of houseboats on the Vembanad Lake, said he had been flooded with phone calls asking if the news was correct.

"I must have received a 100 calls including from abroad asking if Britney is indeed visiting. Even the district collector called me to inquire if it was true, and to all I have given the same answer - that I too have heard about it. I also got a few calls from anxious resort owners from Kumarakom," said Pullikattil.

Meanwhile, a report from London said the pop star has apparently cancelled the visit after learning that the paparazzi have already reached here.

A few years ago another hugely popular singer Paul McCartney went unnoticed even after moving around in the capital city attending a temple festival. It was only after he boarded the aircraft did his travel agent reveal that the singer had been in Thiruvananthapuram.
